Our mission was to realize a video, an interactive application allowing subjective navigation in the area and several hi-resolution 3D images.

Interactive mirror subtracting the real background and replacing it with a virtual one

In the frame of a marketing campaign for a travel agency, UbachsWisbrun/JWT, a large communication group in the Netherlands, has asked Bartpproject to develop an interactive mirror.
The installation allows each person passing by the shop window to have a taste of holyday atmosphere, thanks to an interactive experience.

A big LCD screen covered by a way mirror is placed in the shop window: when nobody is in front of it, the screen looks like a normal mirror.
As soon as a person stops in front of the screen, the real background behind him/her is subtracted, and replaced by exotic backgrounds, changing randomly.

The technology behind this installation is complex: the background is constantly changing, so in this context standard background subtraction techniques are not helpful.
We developed a stereo camera system that, by means of a triangulation algorithm, allows the detection of a foreground object.

3D rendering of the ancient city of Lattara

Latara (also Lattara) is an ancient port town about five miles southeast of Montpellier, in the south of France. The territory of the former city corresponds to today's Lattes.

The settlement was populated from the 6th Century BC to 2nd Century AD, and shows an Etruscan, Greek and Roman phase.

Since 1960 archaeologists are running campaigns of excavations; recently, the French “Ministère de la culture” edited a website reporting the findings of the last campaigns.

The images and video illustrate the possible plan of the city, as well as a reconstruction of streets, houses and private spaces.

The video was produced by Bartproject for La forme interactive; modelling and animation by Stéphane Valette.

Yves Saint Laurent interactive lighting installations

Interactive lighting displays created by Bartproject for Yves Saint Laurent, in the frame of a new shop concept.

First we have simulated the concept in a 3D video rendering, illustrating also the new shop architecture designed by Moatti Riviere. The video was realized in collaboration with le Visiomatique.

We have then developed, in collaboration with Nokinomo and the lighting designer ACL, 4 prototypes to test the interactivity of each installation.

Display boxes light up as you approach, an interactive wall highlights sunglasses as your hand comes near...

Mirrors trigger framing lights as you bring your face close while a smart closet glows when you advance towards the dresses...

Interactive display window Place de l'Opéra, Paris

Project for an interactive display window for the BNP Paribas bank, Place de l'Opéra, Paris.
A 5x5 meters led wall is installed in the window; it is linked to sensors monitoring the vehicle traffic outside.
Each time a vehicle runs in front of the window, the entire wall reacts through a graphical animation and the colour of the logo changes consequently.
The project was realised for A&CO.

Second Night: the architecture

Although Second life is a virtual world, not obeying to the same principles of the real one, a huge amount of his architectural production is strongly inspired or just imitating the real world model. The most important spatial issue seems to be the need to amaze the public with (often tasteless) over-decoration.

In opposition to this tendency I wanted to build something simple, and to design a structure that could only make sense in Second Life.

As in real life, the terrain price in SL is expensive: it makes sense to go vertical. I therefore decided to build a tower composed of ten irregularly superposed levels.

On each level I placed few freely positioned parallelepipeds, with the only function of delimiting the exposition space and reducing the risk of falling down.

Each floor was made of translucent material, so that it was possible to discern in real time what was happening on the level beneath or above. This effect was particularly spectacular when the exposition was invaded by a crowd of avatars.

The building was not provided with stairs: in addition to the option to fly, always possible in SL, the vertical circulation was provided by teleport buttons allowing jumping from a level to another.

Most important of all, the design had to be almost imperceptible, in order to give value to the exposition’s primary material, the art works.

The result was a stack of floors and a scatter of colourful parapets, seeming to precariously obey to some statics law, but actually made possible only thanks to the Second Life unconventional interpretation of the gravity principle.
In the SL forums, the spatial concept of the exposition was either quoted with exaggerated honours or aggressive critics. I am evidently glad of the positive reactions and I will take note of the negative ones for improving my next designs.

Finally, I would like to mention an architect and artist that, since a long time, is designing virtual architecture on Second Life: Andreas Angelidakis.
He participated to the Second Night exhibition, giving a remarkable lecture of his experience of persistent worlds. His “Cloud House” was the cherry on the top of the building…

Second Night exhibition

Second Night is a contemporary art exhibition whose specificity is that it took place simultaneously in real life and in the Second Life virtual world.
The event occurred during the Nuit Blanche 2007, the contemporary art happening organised each year by the Paris city council.

Bertrand Delanoë, the mayor of Paris, presented the project as an example of new creativity, a poetic improvement of the Nuit Blanche 2007 program.

The press conference took place at the Hôtel de Ville, Paris.

The real life event took place at the Hotel d'Albret, in the central district of Marais. Eight thousand six hundred people attended the exhibition, staging ten artists especially involved in the new technologies field: among others Claude Closky, Miltos Manetas, Christophe Bruno.

The video "Furries" from Alain Della Negra et Kaori Kinoshita, was projected an a wall outside the exposition space, adding a surrealistic effect to the already surrealistic content of the footage.

The virtual exhibition on Second Life was attended by five hundred people: the ten artists staged their artworks on transparent glass floors, here a view of the Miltos Manetas floor staging “Supermario sleeping”.

The astonishing atmosphere of the virtual exhibition is well represented in this image: Andreas Angelidakis' avatar(one of the artists exposed), watching Claude Closky’s artwork “Me2”…

The team was busy all the night, dealing with logistic problems, computer crashes, too many avatars asking for informations and directions...

...and even a political protest by a french ecologist group, targeting in particular the performance "Le bureau des délations" by Valery Grancher. A debate between some of the artists participating to the exibition and the political group took place afterwards on this site (in french).

Finally, some of the people who participated to this "Sleepless night", a not so virtual reality for most of us during the exposition's organisational work.

Viso performance, Nuit Blanche 2007

As promised, here some more material about the Viso performance during the Nuit Blanche: some photos and a short video.

I did not had much time for shooting and taking pictures: there were always a lot of people waiting to interact with the piece.

The performance started at around 7PM, and went on till 5AM; I estimate that at least 3000 people have interacted with Viso.

The sensors where placed right on the mannequin, but the interacting face was projected on a big screen far away.

The people where amused and at he same time bemused by the association between the headless mannequin, wearing a wedding dress, and the interacting face zooming in the direction of the approaching observers, following their movements with the eyes...

Viso is an interactive artwork developed by Bartproject, based on a painting by Gregorio Rigotti.

Nuit Blanche 2007: Bartproject participated in two prestigous events

The "Nuit blanche" is the annual rendezvous with the contemporary art organised by the city of Paris.
This year, Ignazio Mottola has participated in two prestigious events: the "Second night" exposition and the "Iconoclaste" happening.

Second Night, an exhibition curated by Christophe Bruno and Daniele Balit, highlights the futurist, committed and often iconoclastic work of ten international artists, among them : Miltos Manetas, Claude Closky and Yona Friedman.
The exibition took place simultaniously in real life (Hôtel d'Albret, 31 rue des Francs-Bourgeois, Paris, 4th district) and in Second Life, the well known virtual world created by Linden Lab.
The virtual building, where visitors from around the world will be able to discover works crossing utopia and reality, was designed by Ignazio Mottola.
It is the first time that the city council of Paris is investing in the Second Life virtual world.

The interactive installation Viso was exposed in the city council of the 4th district (Marais), in the frame of the Iconoclaste exhibition.
Viso's sensors where placed on a tailoring dummy wearing a wedding dress from Chrysalis. This association between fashion end technology allowed surprising interactions between the public, the headless mannequin and the interacting face on the background.

Vinci Immobilier with Architecture Agency Antony Bechu, Tom Sheehan: invitation competition for the Generali Tower in la Défense, Paris Region. The tower is located in La Défense, Paris’ business district. The video illustrates the morphology of the building, which incorporates several energy saving devices, such as solar panels and windmills.
The video also shows the atmosphere of the most important inner spaces; graphic schemas explain the vertical circulation and the horizontal distribution of the building.

Fascinum, the most viewed news pictures in a blink

Fascinum is an Internet installation designed by the artist Christophe Bruno. It shows the news pictures that are the most viewed (ranked from 1 to 10) on different national Yahoo portals, in real time. A panoptic vision of the topics of fascination of mankind: the viewer surfs on the infotainment wave and experiences the paradoxes of global thinking in a blink.

Viso, interactive woman's face

Viso is an interactive installation that explores the possibility of animating images and interacting with them. Viso stimulates an active emotional and physical communication between the observer and a virtual personage: the silhouette of an enigmatic woman’s face. From the distance, the observer sees just the stylized expression of the woman: the eyes, ears and mouth are randomly animated to give the sensation of a living being. As the observer approaches, the face advances towards him/her as in a mirror; if he/she leans to the right or the left, the creature’s eyes follow him/her. If the observer speaks, the woman’s mouth moves in the apparent intention to murmur something, and if he/she touches the image on the screen, the mouth, eyes and eyelashes react to this contact with the fingers. Finally, if the observer touches her nose, the woman disappears from the screen. At this point, observers normally continue to touch the screen in the hope of locking on a zone that is able to make the image reappear. For a variable period however, only flowers will appear on the screen, then the stylized portrait materializes again, to establish once more a mysterious dialogue with those who are on the other side of the screen. Two sensors of proximity, a microphone and a touch screen make it possible to interact with the application: the computer is hidden behind the LCD screen and the whole installation is framed like a painting. Viso is the outcome of research on interactive visual installations carried out by Ignazio Mottola, and is based on a painting by Gregorio Rigotti. The aim of this research is to design artistic, educational and commercial interactive installations that can be integrated into public spaces.

Here some articles concerning Bartproject's participation to the Nuit Blanche.

Le Monde 2/10/2005. The image and the sound, spearheads of contemporary art, recorded many successes and have generated the longest queues on these sites. Starting with that of the town hall of the 4th district where the "Métazone" collective redefined the concept of video surveillance, making each one in turn a Peeping Tom or an observed person. Rather worrying.

TF1 (French main television channel) website. Tested with the Machine de Lombroso, Bertrand Delanoë rated "just". The photo shows him while he hastens to comment: "I did not do it on purpose".

Metro 3/10/2005. In front of a screen believed to read the heart of the people who approach it, the mayor (Bertrand Delanoë) was judged to be "just" and was quick to comment: "I did not do it on purpose", undoubtedly referring to the political quarrels that inevitably beset Parisian officials.

La Machine de Lombroso, interactive soul detector

La Machine de Lombroso is inspired by the works of nineteenth century criminologists and anthropologists, such as Cesare Lombroso and Havelock Ellis, who thought it possible to detect misconduct by analyzing the physical characteristics of criminals.
Our society, confronted with the challenge of terrorism and criminality, tries to defend itself using increasingly sophisticated software and data bases. It is not improbable that the works of Lombroso and Ellis will be one day put again into practice, by crossing them with new techniques of anthropometry. While waiting for this technological progress, the Machine of Lombroso is already able "to detect" the character (good, malicious, altruistic, egotistic...) that hides behind a face.

The observers are filmed and their image is shown on a LCD screen in real time. As soon as a witness approaches the screen, their face disappears gradually and transforms into a superimposed silhouette that tracks them, as a shadow. This unreal image indicates the character of the person.
The installation is thus a surrealist, playful and dynamic composition. La Machine de Lombroso was exposed during the 4th Nuit Blanche in the Town hall of the 4th district in Paris, within the context of the exposition "L'envers de la vidéo surveillance", organized by Méta Zone.

Eiffage, Groupe 6, video for an Hospital Centre in Paris

Invitation competition for the South Francillien Hospital Centre, Parisian Region. Clients: Eiffage Constuction, Groupe 6 Architects. The building is located in the south of Paris, between a highway and a wood. The video illustrates the architecural shape of this 1000 bed hospital, as well as the atmosphere of the most interesting inner spaces. The competition was won by Groupe 6 and Eiffage; the project is at present under construction.

Senso opening in Paris

Senso was presented for the first time to the public during an opening in the Samson clothing shop in Paris. During the event, Samson also presented his 3D scanner for vestimentary digitalization, while Senso was projected in a large format.

Tuca Tuca, interactive kiosk with transparent touch screen

Tuca Tuca is an interactive installation project developed for an important venture capital company. Tuca Tuca makes it possible to interact with a standard object, a glass plate, and to understand that it is interactive, thanks to Sensitive Object’s technology.

The system is composed of a structure of glass and steel, on which is hung a 19"LCD screen, made transparent by a specific process. The screen components are dissimulated behind a double aluminium framework. The screen is related to a small size computer, placed in the pedestal. Sensitive Object sensors are fixed on the glass plate, where transparent marks, which allow interactions by touching, are also fixed. Other interactions are also possible by touching at the level of the LCD screen. A graphic interface, which makes it possible for visitors to discover the Sensitive Object technology, was developed especially for this purpose.

To create an additional scenographic effect, it is also possible "to light" the glass flagstone: mini neon tubes, dissimulated in the U supporting profile of the flagstone, are switched off and on by touching one of the marks.

Jean Nouvel, cultural and entertainment centre in Kuwait City

The main aim of this animation is to render, in just 3 minutes, the architectural complexity and atmosphere of some of the key places of this huge city centre project. Floriviso, interactive installation

Floriviso represents the evolution of the two preceding installations. Two proximity sensors make it possible to interact with the image, a camera observes the environment and films it. The computer is separated from the screen, which makes it possible to hang the screen frame, or to place it on a surface.

Senso, interactive digital painting

Senso is an example of digital evolution using the most familiar form of art, painting. We worked mainly on two different topics: dynamic representation and the involvement of the environment into the composition of the scene.
The paint, formerly fixed on the canvas, becomes in Senso a persisting flow of colours and forms, randomly decaying and reorganising, generating endless combinations. The ambience around the painting takes part in the composition. An electronic eye looks at the surrounding environment, records, deforms and moves it: the perpetual flow of colours and graphic elements blend with the representation of the immediate space, which becomes a constantly evolving background landscape.

Certain graphic elements appear in the composition subsequent to sound variations. If the sound is continuous, the movement of the electronic eye accelerates. In Senso the classical shape of the painting is maintained: first we see a familiar object, then discover that it is interactive, sensitive, and that it invites us to play with it.
